The Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA) is a registered charity in Scotland dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by Huntington’s disease, a degenerative brain disorder caused by an inherited faulty gene that damages the brain over time. It is the only charity in the country exclusively focused on providing expert, personalised support to address the complexities of the disease, its impact on families, and the lack of awareness among health, social care providers, and the public.

SHA’s core mission is to deliver specialist services that help those impacted by Huntington’s disease cope with its severe effects, while raising awareness and advocating for better support systems.

The association offers nationwide specialist support, including personalised care for families primarily in their own homes, grants for those living with the condition, and resources to improve quality of life. This includes educational information on the disease, which has a 50% inheritance risk if a parent is affected.

Advocacy Efforts: SHA is actively campaigning against cuts to specialist services in Glasgow, with notable involvement from figures like Nora Guthrie (daughter of Woody Guthrie), to safeguard support for Huntington’s families. It has also joined calls for urgent action as the social care sector reaches a “tipping point” due to crises.

Events and Fundraising: Upcoming events for 2025/26 include the Women of Scotland Lunch featuring Olympic stars like Dame Katherine Grainger and patron Sarah Winckless to champion the cause. The association encourages participation in #TeamSHA events and challenges to make a difference for affected families.

Community Engagement: Opportunities to get involved through volunteering, donations, or support initiatives are highlighted to directly benefit families across Scotland.
