Nîmes DIY Walking Tour

Nîmes DIY Walking Tour

Distance: 5 km (almost 3 miles);  Duration: 2-8 hours

This DIY Walking Tour of Nîmes is just 5 kilometres long (about 3 miles).

And as “normal” walking speed is around 7kmh (or 4mph), this is a very easy, and enjoyable, 2-3 hour stroll. If you have the time though, I would recommend REALLY taking your time in Nîmes, and split the walk over two days (maybe even three?).

And as it’s a circular DIY Walking Tour, you can start and end at any point you wish (wherever is closest to your Nîmes hotel perhaps?). Your only real choice on which route you take, and whether you follow the route in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction, depends on whether you wish to visit the indoor market – as it’s better the earlier you visit (it opens at 7am – and in any case, it is only open until 1pm). So, if you wish to visit the market in Nîmes (Les Halles de Nîmes), you need to visit early in the day.

On this circular Nîmes DIY Walking Tour, you will also pass:

Nîmes train station > Fontaine et Jet d’Eau de la Gare > Esplanade du Général de Gaulle > Fontaine Pradier > Statue of Nimeño II > Musée de la Romanité > The Nîmes ARENA > Carré d’Art > Maison Carrée > Square Antonin > Quai de la Fontaine > Canal de la Fontaine > Les Jardins de la Fontaine > Temple of Diana > Les Halles de Nîmes (Nîmes Market) > Place de l’Horloge > Nîmes Cathedral > Musée du Vieux Nîmes > Porte d’Auguste > Église Saint-Baudile de Nîmes > Natural History Museum of Nîmes > and Église Sainte Perpétue.

And because it is indeed a DIY walking tour of Nîmes, you can take it at your very own pace; stopping for a coffee/snack/drink where, when, and for as long as you like; lingering at the attractions of Nîmes that interest you (and speeding past those that don’t).

So if you were to simply rush round without stopping, you could easily complete the entire journey in a very leisurely 2-3 hours. However, I would recommend taking a full day (or even 2-3 days if you have time) to complete this circular walking route around central Nîmes, as there are so many great attractions in Nîmes to visit; and so many wonderful pavement cafes to stop at – while you watch Nîmes stroll by.
