Accessible Humboldt Forum in Berlin

Accessible Humboldt Forum Berlin

The Humboldt Forum in Berlin is closed on Tuesdays.

Sometime in the very near future, the newly-opened Humboldt Forum will become the #1 visitor attraction in Berlin.

The Humboldt Forum is a recreation of the Royal Palace (the Berlin Palace) that once stood here. The original Berlin Palace was badly damaged during WWII, and was pulled down by the East German authorities in 1950, and the Palace of the Republic of East Germany (the East German Parliament) was constructed in its place, which itself was pulled down in 2009.

And when it comes to accessibility (especially accessibility in a post-Covid world), it is THE perfect destination for wheelchair users visiting Berlin. And for two main, and very practical, reasons:

As it is such a cavernous building, there is plenty of space between visitors;

And being built so recently (it only opened to the public in July 2021), and as accessibility was a key consideration in the design of the Humboldt Forum building, the wheelchair access is simply wonderful.

Inclusive design at it’s finest.

Getting to the Humboldt Forum by Berlin's Public Transport

There’s really only one choice when it comes to reaching the Humboldt Forum using Berlin’s public transport system: take the U-Bahn (line U5) to the accessible Museuminsel U-Bahn station. It’s located directly outside Humboldt Forum (and the street-level accessible elevator is located right beside the main Museuminsel U-Bahn station entrance).

However, you can also get to the Humboldt Forum by accessible Berlin bus (bus line 147 stops right outside, at the “Berliner Schloss – Berlin” bus stop – and bus lines 100 & 300 stop at the nearby “Staatsoper” bus stop on Unter den Linden).

Access - Entrance to the Humboldt Forum in Berlin

There are 6 entrances to the Humboldt Forum at different areas of the Humboldt Forum building. The main entrance (accessible) is at Portal 3 – on the historic facade, below the dome. It’s very easy to find the main entrance – as it will be in font of you as you leave the new Museuminsel U-Bahn station. This is the entrance to use to access the main exhibitions in the Humboldt Forum.

Portals 1 and 5 (on the very modern looking North and South facades) lead to the open-air Schlüter Courtyard (and from there you can access the Video Panorama and Sculpture Hall.

Coats and jackets (plus bags larger than A4-size) must be left in the cloakroom on the ground floor – or in the lockers. Use of the cloakroom is free of charge though.

Accessible Toilets at the Humboldt Forum in Berlin

There are accessible toilets located throughout the Humboldt Forum building.

Accessible Cafe/Restaurants at the Humboldt Forum in Berlin

There are 5 different restaurants/cafes in the Humboldt Forum. Enjoy everything from a quick bite in the Forum Café (in the Stair Hall on the ground floor) to an amazing dinner in the rooftop restaurant Baret (there are some amazing views of central Berlin from up there too).
