Accessible Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is in two parts. At ground-level is the actual memorial itself. 2,711 concrete stelae, of varying sizes, sit on an undulating slope. The combination of the irregularly sized stelae, with the irregular slope, instils a feeling of unease in visitors. Deliberately so (this is not a comfortable subject).

And, although they all have identical widths and depths, the stelae vary in height too: from a lowly 20cm – all the way up to a towering 4.7 metres. This change in height, and the narrowness of the alleys between the stelae, adds to this feeling of unease. Creating a feeling of claustrophobia even (and being lower down to start with, this feeling of claustrophobia is only heightened for wheelchair users).

The undulating slope, and the narrow alleys between the stones, may sound like this will make the memorial inaccessible though. Not so.

13 of these “alleys” are slightly wider than the rest (specifically to allow wheelchair access). And as well as just being wider, the slope angle is 8% maximum. These wider alleys are indicated on the public pavements which surround the memorial. They are also laid with specially grooved paving stones.

The Information Centre, which is situated below ground (beneath the memorial), is accessible to wheelchair users too (via an elevator), and has no barriers of any kind.

An accessible toilet is available in the Information Centre too.

For safety reasons though, only a maximum of 6 wheelchair users can visit the exhibition at the same time.

As the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is easily accessible from the Brandenburg Gate (it’s just 300 meters south of of the Brandenburg Gate itself), then combining visits to both is a great idea.

Getting to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe by Berlin's Public Transport

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is easily reached from Brandenburger Tor S-Bahn/U-Bahn station (about 400m away).

The accessible on-street elevator access to Brandenburger Tor station can be found here.

Access - Entrance to the Holocaust Memorial (Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe) in Berlin

The entrance to the below-ground Information Centre of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe has a wheelchair accessible elevator too. It’s not a case of just calling the elevator yourself though (the assistant at the entrance of the Information Centre will arrange for it to be brought up if necessary).

Accessible Toilets at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin

You have two options for accessible toilets at the Berlin Holocaust Memorial. One will cost you €1 – the other is free:

If you are simply visiting the main memorial (ground level), then there is a wheelchair accessible public toilet near the entrance to the memorial – here. It will cost you €1 though.

However, my advice would be go down to the Information Centre below the memorial (below ground – but there’s a wheelchair accessible elevator at the entrance). Entrance to the wheelchair accessible toilet here is free (as is entrance to the entire Information Centre). Plus, the toilet here has more interior space to move your wheelchair around in.

However, although it is indeed free to enter the Information Centre below the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin, voluntary donations are gladly accepted. And if you’re simply going down to use the toilet – then you should DEFINITELY leave a donation too.
