Accessible Madame Tussauds in London

The Madame Tussauds London building was built in 1884. Long before wheelchair accessibility was even a thing.

As a result, and although the Madame Tussauds London building is totally wheelchair accessible thanks to various lifts between all floors, only three wheelchairs are permitted in the building at any one time (so that Madame Tussauds London staff can provide evacuation assistance to wheelchair using guests). To help them achieve this limit, only ONE wheelchair using guest can enter the Madame Tussauds London building every hour, on the hour.

It’s a well-packed and very busy place too (although from 3pm onwards is slightly quieter for wheelchair users at Madame Tussauds London).

This is why you should definitely definitely definitely book your wheelchair slot at Madame Tussauds London online in advance (IMPORTANT: this only reserves a time-slot – you will still also have to purchase ONE ticket for yourself).

A FREE carer’s ticket is also available (documentary proof, of the wheelchair user’s disability, will have to be shown on arrival). Accepted documentation:

– A valid Access Card
– A valid Blue or Orange badge
– Allowance Book or Letter confirming Entitlement to Disability Living Allowance (DLA), or Personal Independence Payments (PIP)
– Attendance Allowance or Carer’s Allowance letter of award
– Incapacity Benefit books or confirmation letter
– Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI) or BD8
– International Proof of Disability (International Symbol of Access or similar must be printed on it).

The “Spirit of London” taxi ride experience is NOT wheelchair accessible though.

Accessible Parking at Madame Tussauds in London

There are no parking spaces at all at Madame Tussauds London.

And on-street parking in the immediate area is very limited – so you might end up parking some distance from Madame Tussauds.

However, there are two accessible parking bays in the NCP Marylebone Road car park (and the accessible parking spaces can be booked online here). The NCP Marylebone Road car park is about 500m away from Madame Tuusauds though, but, importantly, it is on the correct side of the main road (Marylebone Road). There is a vehicle height restriction of 2.15m in the car park.

Getting to Madame Tussauds in London using Public Transport

Train:

The closest mainline train station is London’s Marylebone Station – which is served by trains from Chiltern Railways only though.

The much busier London Euston Train Station is a bit further away (just under 1 km), but is also on the “right side of the street”. So if the distance is not a problem for you/your companion, then this is definitely an option for getting to Madame Tussauds London. London Euston Train Station serves a lot more destinations though, so will be useful to a lot more wheelchair users.

Tube (Underground):

Although the closest Tube station to Madame Tussauds London is Baker Street Underground station, Baker Street station is not wheelchair accessible.

The closest Tube station to Madame Tussauds London which is wheelchair accessible is also at Euston.

Euston Square Underground station is partially step-free (but only when travelling on westbound trains though).

Bus:

There is a bus stop just 2 minutes from Madame Tussauds London, which is served by buses on bus lines: 18, 27, 30, 205, & 453.

All buses in central London are wheelchair accessible – and are equipped with a retractable ramp (automatically controlled by the bus driver). Bus travel is also free for wheelchair users (your companion has to pay the correct fare though). I recommend that using the official TfL Journey Planner to find the best route for yourself.

Taxi:

By far the easiest way to arrive at Madame Tussauds London in a wheelchair, and by using public transport, is in one of London’s famous black cabs (taxis).

It’s also the most expensive way to reach Madame Tussauds London (but is so worth it in my opinion).

All London taxis are equipped with a retractable ramp.

Access - Entrance to Madame Tussauds in London

The queues at Madame Tussauds London can be long. Especially during school holidays, and on weekends.

All wheelchair users should head to the priority Fast Track queue though.

One carer over the age of 14 is admitted free of charge (documentary proof of your disability is required).

Accessible Toilets at Madame Tussauds in London

There are 3 wheelchair accessible toilets which are located at various places throughout Madame Tussauds London. All 3 wheelchair accessible toilets can only be accessed with a RADAR key though. However, RADAR keys are also available from the Madame Tussaud’s staff if required.
