Accessible Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA)

All public areas of the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) are wheelchair accessible – thanks to a wheelchair accessible lift which reaches all floors.

“Not far off perfect!!”

Accessibility Review of the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) – by “AbbeyMiller” (Euan’s Guide).

Accessible Parking at the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA)

Although there is no car park at the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) itself, on-street Blue Badge parking is available very nearby on Queen Street (the road that runs by the front of the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA)).

However, Queen Street is a one-way street, and these accessible parking spaces are located on the left-hand side of Queen Street just before you reach the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) – just look out for the “Guildhall” building on your left (at 57 Queen Street). The accessible parking spaces are located directly in front of the building.

Getting to the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) using Public Transport

Train:

The Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) is just a 5-minute level walk/roll from both Glasgow Central Train Station and Glasgow Queen Street Train Station.

Bus:

The closest wheelchair accessible bus stop is on nearby Ingram Street. But, as both main train stations in central Glasgow are so close, you shouldn’t need to go anywhere near a bus to visit the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).

Taxi:

Again, as both main train stations in central Glasgow are just so close, you shouldn’t need to use a taxi either.

However, if you do need a taxi to cover the short distance between either central Glasgow train station and the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), there are wheelchair accessible taxis available from the taxi ranks immediately outside both Glasgow Queen Street and Glasgow Central train stations.

To call a wheelchair accessible taxi from your Glasgow hotel, simply call Glasgow Taxis (+44[0]141 429 7070). ALL their taxis are fitted with a wheelchair ramp.

Access - Entrance to the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA)

When looking at a photograph or video of GoMA (the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art), it’s hard to believe that the building is actually wheelchair accessible – as it’s on a stepped platform; and then there are more steps leading up to the actual entrance to the building (and there are no wheelchair ramps to be seen as an alternative wheelchair accessible way in).

However, those wheelchair ramps ARE there (they’re just very cleverly hidden from view – so that there is no detrimental effect on the aesthetics of the building’s appearance).

The Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art most-definitely IS wheelchair accessible.

Access is in two stages though:

First, you have to get on to the stepped platform.

No problem.

On either side of the statue in front of GoMA (the Duke of Wellington, riding his horse, and wearing his traffic cone), there is a ramped surface which allows you to bypass the stairs which seemingly surround the GoMA building;

Then, once you’re on the platform, you are faced with even more steps up to the entrance.

But worry not:

On either side of the steps/columns, but BEHIND them, there are wheelchair accessible ramps cut into the stone steps. Again, bypassing the barrier that the steps seem to present.

Accessible Toilets at the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA)

The wheelchair accessible toilet at GoMA (Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art) is located on the Lower Ground floor – which can be reached by the wheelchair accessible lift.

Accessible Cafe/Restaurant at the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA)

The cafe at GoMA is open Monday-Saturday, during opening hours, and serves a selection of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and snacks.
