*Although the ZSL London Zoo is almost 100% wheelchair accessible, there are a number of ramped entrances where you may require an assistant (and especially in the tunnels leading to the “Into Africa” and “Rainforest Life” zones). Please watch the ZSL London Zoo Accessibility video which explains the easiest entry points for wheelchair users.
Arrival at ZSL London Zoo by Car
There are two car parks at ZSL London Zoo.
Pre-booked ZSL London Zoo ticket holders should use the main car park. Blue Badge holders can park free of charge. There is then step-free access to the main entrance to London Zoo (with dropped kerbs where needed).
Those without pre-booked tickets, and who will simply be paying on the day, should park in the smaller car park opposite the main entrance. This car park has 5 spaces for Blue Badge holders.
There is also one disabled parking bay on the street near the main entrance. There is no dropped kerb here, but ZSL London Zoo staff have a small portable ramp if needed.
On-street parking is also available nearby, and Blue Badge holders can park here free for 4 hours.
Arrival at ZSL London Zoo by Public Transport
Tube (Underground):
Although Camden Town station is the nearest Tube station; Euston Square Tube station (Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines) is the closest Tube station to ZSL London Zoo which offers completely step-free access. This is almost 1 mile away though. However, and if this distance is manageable for you/your companion, the walk to ZSL London Zoo takes you through the wonderful Regent’s Park. And there are plenty of benches in Regent’s Park should you/your companion need to take a break for 5 minutes.
Bus:
Bus number 274 stops on Prince Albert Road near to the entrance to ZSL London Zoo.
Taxi:
By far the easiest way to arrive at ZSL London Zoo with your wheelchair, and by using public transport, is in one of London’s famous black cabs (taxis). It’s also the most expensive way to reach ZSL London Zoo . All London taxis are equipped with a retractable ramp.
Entrance - Access to ZSL London Zoo
The “fast track entrance” and the main entrance to ZSL London Zoo are both wheelchair accessible.
Wheelchair using visitors can go straight to the ticket booth, avoiding any queues.
One carer is admitted to ZSL London Zoo free of charge.
Manual wheelchairs are available to borrow (on payment of a small deposit though). Booking these in advance is recommended.
ZSL London Zoo Accessibility
ZSL London Zoo is over 170 years old – so contains many older buildings (12 of which are listed). Even so, most of the Zoo is accessible to wheelchair users (and to visitors with walking difficulties).
The paths throughout ZSL London Zoo are generally tarmac (or hard-packed gravel, and a few wooden boardwalks). The paths are generally quite wide. And there is level or ramped access to most buildings.
“Land of the Lions” is wheelchair friendly and has a wheelchair accessible lift which allows visitors to access the higher viewing platform.
“Tiger Territory” is also wheelchair friendly. And there is also a wheelchair accessible lift here which also allows visitors to access the higher viewing platform.
The historic Lubetkin penguin pool (Grade 1 listed) has limited viewing for wheelchair users and very small children though.
The sloped ramps leading to the two tunnels in the Zoo are quite steep (and you might need a companion to help you push up the ramps on either side of the tunnels).
Wheelchair Accessible Toilets at ZSL London Zoo
Wheelchair accessible toilets are available at various locations within ZSL London Zoo (at B.U.G.S, the Aquarium and Animal Adventure), plus there is a larger wheelchair accessible toilet facility by the main entrance.
There is also a wheelchair accessible toilet in The Terrace Restaurant.
A hoist and changing bed are available in the First Aid Centre.
Wheelchair Accessible Cafe/Restaurant at ZSL London Zoo
The Terrace Restaurant is fully wheelchair accessible, and has a wheelchair accessible lift which takes you up to the outdoor terrace area. There is also a wheelchair accessible toilet here.
