Getting There – Arrival at the National Maritime Museum
The easiest way to get to the National Maritime Museum from Amsterdam Centraal station- is to walk/wheel along the pedestrian bankside/bridges of the Oosterdok, passing central Amsterdam’s wheelchair accessible NEMO Science Centre on the way. About a 15-20 minute walk/roll. Just turn LEFT as you leave Amsterdam Centraal and head towards the green (oxidised copper) ship-shaped building of the NEMO Science Museum (NEMO is a science museum aimed at children). After there, keep heading in a similar direction – you will see the replica East Indiaman ship “Amsterdam” and the imposing square building of the National Maritime Museum on the other side of the dock. Simply follow the walking path around.
If the distance is too much for you/your wheelchair pusher, then there are also two buses from Amsterdam Centraal to the National Maritime Museum (bus numbers 22 & 43). The bus stop nearest the National Maritime Museum is called “Amsterdam Kadijksplein” and is just a short distance from the National Maritime Museum entrance.
All central Amsterdam buses have a fold-out wheelchair ramp at the rear door, and a wheelchair space inside the bus.
Powered mobility scooters are not permitted on Amsterdam buses though.
Entrance – Access to the National Maritime Museum
Entrance to the National Maritime Museum is via a ramp leading up to the entrance door.
It’s not a ridiculously steep ramp, and it’s not a long ramp either – but you may still need a wee push to get up.
Entrance tickets are available on the door – but booking a ticket online in advance of your visit saves waiting in the ticket line (and saves you 1 Euro too).
Companion tickets are free of charge. However, your companion must still book a ticket too (free of charge) for a specific time slot. Again, either online (in advance of your visit), or at the door on the day.
Powered mobility scooters are not permitted in the National Maritime Museum. However, manual wheelchairs are available to borrow.
Bags larger than A4 size are also not permitted in the National Maritime Museum. There are free lockers available to store any larger bags though.
National Maritime Museum Accessibility
The entirety of the Amsterdam National Maritime Museum is wheelchair accessible.
And wheelchair accessible lifts will take you to all exhibitions on upper floors.
The replica East Indiaman ship (the “Amsterdam”) is only partially wheelchair accessible though. A wheelchair lift and (fairly steep) ramp allows wheelchair access to the lower deck. However, there are then stairs leading up to the main deck.
Wheelchair Accessible Toilets in the National Maritime Museum
Wheelchair accessible toilets can be found on every floor of the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. All wheelchair accessible toilets are fitted with grab rails.
Wheelchair Accessible Cafe/Restaurant in the National Maritime Museum
The café-restaurant at the National Maritime Museum has two seating areas: in the courtyard (covered), and on the waterside terrace outside (if the weather’s playing nice when you’re visiting Amsterdam).
See the Wheelchair Accessible Amsterdam Guide for details of other wheelchair accessible attractions, restaurants and hotels in Amsterdam.
