Weekdays are better – and even better earlier in the week (but don’t even try to use public transport during the morning and evening rush hours).

Getting to London

London has numerous main train stations, dotted around the city. And where you begin your journey geographically in the UK will determine what London train station you arrive in.

Travelling by car? Central London has a “congestion charge”. Plus some seriously expensive parking rates. So driving is going to be an expensive option.

Let the train take the strain instead.

And once you arrive in your central London train station, simply take one of the famous London black cabs to your central London hotel (all of London’s black cabs are equipped with a wheelchair ramp).

Getting around London

Accessible public transport in London is a very mixed-bag.

All buses are theoretically accessible (all buses are fitted with an automatic/extendable ramp), with each bus also having a dedicated wheelchair space.

However, this wheelchair space can also be used as a space for prams & strollers. By law, wheelchair users have priority use of this space. But be prepared to verbally fight for it at times.

Not much fun.

And using the underground subway system (the “Tube”) needs a bit of advance planning. Most Tube stations are wheelchair accessible. Most. Some are not though. And of those that are, sometimes they are only in a certain direction. The same with interchanges.

But it definitely can be done. You just need to know in advance which stations and interchanges you plan to use. Transport for London (TfL) have an excellent online London public transport accessibility tool for seeing just which Tube stations are accessible (and if there are any limitations for each, or if you need to use a specific entrance).

The best way to get around central London – is also the most-expensive way to get around central London: the famous London black taxis (all are equipped with a wheelchair ramp).

But a combination of taxis and walking (rolling) though, is more than enough to visit the most popular visitor attractions in central London.
