places to eat on london diy walking tour

places to eat on london diy walking tour

There are over 100 places to eat along the route of the London Thames DIY Walking Tour. Everything from humble coffeeshops to luxury restaurants. Not forgetting the open-air bars and terraces that have excellent views of the River Thames & the London skyline of course.

All are listed in the order that they appear along the route (listed in “west to east” order). And with the attractions also listed, so that you can see, at a glance, the places to eat, and the toilet facilities available, at any particular point on the route.

Allowing you to plan your route easier (“we’ll see all these places, spend an hour seeing this attraction in particular, have a coffee here, see some more attractions, then eat/drink around here, see the rest of the attractions along the route, then head back to our London hotel”). How exact, or loose, you want your itinerary to be is completely up to you.

But that is the important point. YOU are 100% in control of YOUR visit to London.

And for other wheelchair-users, the places to eat on the south bank of the River Thames which have those all-important accessible toilets, are indicated too.

TOWER BRIDGE >

END: TOWER OF LONDON

So where is best to stop and eat along the route of the London Thames DIY Walking Tour?

There are some serious generalisations here. Plus, I personally prefer to spend my money in the attractions themselves (especially when they are otherwise free to visit). I also like a caffeine boost as early on the route as possible.

And it also depends on what direction you will bes following the route from.

But the biggest determining factor of where to eat in London – will be the weather!

So.

Starting from Westminster Abbey, and then heading east:

I would have coffee/breakfast in either Westminster Abbey (at the Cellarium Café – and on a good day, I would eat on the Terrace there), or in the Houses of Parliament (in the Jubilee Cafe).

The restaurants and coffee shops before the London Eye are usually swamped with sweaty/agitated tourists, so I’d miss those.

I would then continue until the Tate Modern (as I love the cafe there).

For a more substantial meal, I would hang on until The Swan at Shakespeare’s Globe though.

And that would pretty much see me through until the end of the route at Tower Bridge & the Tower of London.

——–

Going in the other direction, and therefore starting out at the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, I would wait and have my first coffee in Hay’s Galleria somewhere (it’s all covered there, so even on a not-so-sunny London day, I could still drink and relax on a terrace there).

That would keep me going until I reached The Swan at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, where I would stop for a more substantial meal.

I would then continue until the end of the route at Westminster Abbey, and treat myself to Afternoon Tea in the Cellarium Café – and on a good day, I would eat on the Terrace).

Getting fed, watered, and pampered there, before returning to my London hotel.
