Accessible Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona

The Palau de la Música Catalana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is most-definitely my #1 recommendation for a wheelchair accessible attraction in Barcelona.

And the Palau de la Música Catalana gets some seriously good reviews (with many people saying that their visit to the Palau de la Música Catalana was the highlight of their entire visit to Barcelona).

There are two different ways to visit the Palau de la Música Catalana: either by taking one of their guided or self-guided tours; or by just actually seeing a performance there.

And each way of visiting the Palau de la Música Catalana has its own merits:

Many visitors who only went on a guided/self-guided tour of the Palau de la Música Catalana, say they wish that they’d seen a performance there too.

But these people definitely didn’t miss out – as the tour of the Palau de la Música Catalana goes to places that are usually off limits to concert-goers.

So, what’s the best way to visit the Palau de la Música Catalana?

If you only have the option of doing one or the other (a performance or a tour), then take in a show.

But if you have the time to do both – then you definitely won’t regret doing so [and if you’ve saved a few pennies by NOT visiting Casa Batlló, then spending this same money on a couple of tickets for a show at the Palau de la Música Catalana, will be a well-cherished memory of your time in Barcelona I’m sure].

Looking for more detailed information (not just accessibility information) on the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona?

This article, written and photographed by a local travel blogger, is by far the most detailed, and the most beautifully-photographed, guide to the Palau de la Música Catalana that I’ve come across (while researching the wheelchair accessibility of the Palau de la Música Catalana).

There are three large lifts/elevators which connect all floors of the Palau de la Música Catalana. The lifts are all wheelchair accessible.

And, other than the beautiful stairways (which wheelchair users can see from above and below), there are no barriers to accessibility at all at the Palau de la Música Catalana.

Getting to Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona using Public Transport

Metro:

The nearest Metro station to the Palau de la Música Catalana is Urquinaona Station. Unfortunately, Urquinaona station is one of the Barcelona Metro stations that has not yet been made accessible. However, the accessible Metro station at Plaça de Catalunya is not too far away.

Bus:

Bus lines 47, V15 and V17 all stop within easy rolling distance of the Palau de la Música Catalana.

And the entire Barcelona bus network has been fully wheelchair accessible since 2007.

All public buses in Barcelona have driver-operated retractable wheelchair ramps, and dedicated spaces for wheelchair users inside.

Taxi:

Definitely the easiest way to travel around Barcelona. Possibly more expensive though, but a million times more comfortable – so maybe the added expense is really worth it here?

There’s no single telephone number to request a wheelchair accessible Barcelona taxi though (there are loads of different taxi cab operators in Barcelona – and although they all operate the same distinctive black and yellow cars, they all use different telephone numbers).

One of the biggest taxi operators in Barcelona who have wheelchair accessible taxis is Taxi Amic (they have 53 accessible taxis in Barcelona).

Your Barcelona hotel should also be able to arrange an accessible taxi for you though (and will be able to give you a number to call to request a return journey – although it may be easier just to arrange a return time at the start though).

NEW: There is a relatively new app that you can use to hail an accessible Barcelona taxi using your mobile phone. And as you don’t have to speak to an actual person, there is no language barrier to get in the way. The name of the app is AMB Mobilitat (Picmi). Available on both the Google Play & Apple App Store.

More “mini-ranks” are being added in 2023 too.

Accessible Entrance to Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona

There are two different entrances to the Palau de la Música Catalana:

The main entrance at 6 Carrer de Sant Pere Més Alt; and another entrance from Carrer Palau de la Música/Plaça del Foyer.

And although both entrances are accessible, wheelchair users are recommended to use the Carrer Palau de la Música/Plaça del Foyer entrance [as the main entrance is usually via an inaccessible revolving door – but there is also a separate “emergency exit” door here, which is accessible, but this requires staff assistance].

Accessible Toilets at Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona

There are two wheelchair accessible toilets in the Palau de la Música Catalana: one located on the ground floor lobby of the Petit Palau; and another on the first floor (Balcony level) of the main Palau de la Música Catalana concert hall.

Accessible Cafe/Restaurant at Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona

There are two different eating & drinking option at the Palau de la Música Catalana:

Cafè Palau, located in the Foyer del Palau, is a café/restaurant with a modern cuisine based on Catalan tradition.

Cafè Palau also has a private outdoor terrace – which is a veritable oasis in the centre of Barcelona.

And if you’re coming to see a performance at the Palau de la Música Catalana, Cafè Palau has a special service before and after concerts, and also during performance breaks.

Looking for something more substantial?

The upscale “Pizzicato Gastrobar – Oyster Bar” is a real treat.

Coming to a show at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona?

Both the main auditorium, and the auditorium in the Petit Palau, have areas reserved for wheelchair users:

Seats 1-6 in the circular rows of the Stalls in the main auditorium have wheelchair spaces. Plus, Boxes 11 and 13 on the second tier have space for two wheelchairs each.

The auditorium in the Petit Palau has three spaces for wheelchairs on the back row of the balcony – and more space can be provided, upon request, if required.
