Lisbon is most definitely NOT an accessible city.
First of all, the city is built on a series of hills. So no matter where you are going, you will be going up/down hills. And some of the gradients are seriously wheelchair-unfriendly.
But it gets worse!
In their wisdom, the city planners of Lisbon have decided to cobble all of their PAVEMENTS. Not the roads though (we can’t give motorists a bumpy ride now).
And it’s the worst kind of cobbles too. Not the rounded-edged cobbles which won’t give you a puncture, but smaller “square” cobbles, with a few sharp corners, which will leave you bleeding profusely if you’re unlucky enough to stumble and fall.
Luckily, the weather was great when I was in Lisbon. But had these pavements been wet, I’d probably be writing this message from a Portuguese hospital.
